Poplars Women Softball – Season Summary
The Poplars Women have completed their first-ever softball season, and what a remarkable journey it has been. Every single player began as a complete beginner — most had never played cricket or softball in their lives — yet over the past three months they have shown extraordinary commitment, determination, and a genuine hunger to learn the game.
Training took place every Tuesday, and even as the evenings grew darker, the team never stopped. Week after week, they turned up with energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to push themselves. Their dedication has been one of the standout stories of the season, and the entire Poplars community is incredibly proud of how much effort they have put in.
Across the season, the team played two friendly matches and participated in two festivals, with three games in each festival. These matches became stepping stones in their development, each one showing clear improvement from the last.
Their early friendlies were tough tests:
- vs Carrington: Cavaliers & Carrington CC won
- vs Basford Mill: Basford Mill Women won

Despite the results, the progress was unmistakable. Fielding became sharper, bowling more controlled, and batting more confident. Players who once struggled to bowl straight were soon delivering balls with a clean one bounce, and batters who were unsure of their stance were confidently hitting shots on both the off side and leg side. Catching and ground fielding improved dramatically, with players showing better anticipation, positioning, and teamwork.
Their biggest challenge came at the Thrumpton Festival, where they played three competitive matches. The team earned a tie in one game and narrowly lost the other two by around 15 runs, proving just how far they had come in such a short time. The margins were small, the effort was huge, and the confidence was visible in every player.

Across both festivals, the improvement in bowling rhythm, batting technique, and overall game awareness was clear to everyone watching. What started as a group of beginners slowly transformed into a team that could compete, communicate, and support each other on the field.
As the outdoor season comes to an end, the Poplars Women are already looking forward to the next chapter — indoor practice and the indoor season. With the foundation they’ve built, the skills they’ve learned, and the spirit they’ve shown, the future looks incredibly bright.
This season has been a story of growth, resilience, and team spirit. From not knowing the basics to playing close, competitive matches, the Poplars Women have achieved something truly special. Their improvement has been remarkable, and they should be immensely proud of everything they’ve accomplished in just three months.
